'Inside Out' 'Jurassic' In
Pixar's Inside Out opens in a reported 3,946 venues tomorrow. With excellent reviews and the strong Pixar brand $71M for the three-day weekend seems quite possible. That figure is higher than some estimates, which are placing it around $60M. But, basing it upon an $18K per theater take, which is what Pete Docter's last Pixar feature, Up averaged on its 2009 opening, gets it to $71M handily.
That will not be enough to secure the animated film first place at the weekend box office though. Universal will retain the title there as even with a hefty 59.3% drop Jurassic World would place it at around $85M in its second week. The film has been tearing up the week with $25.3M on Monday, $24.3 on Tuesday and $19.9M on Wednesday so $85M may be too low.
Dope, a Sundance hit that is being given a real chance in the market by Open Road Films, is in 2,002 venues. It should pull in $9M+ in its bow.
Spy will likely have another gentle 46% decline for $7.2M and fourth place. San Andreas is next with $5.4M and Insidious 3 in sixth with $3.7M.
Love & Mercy, which goes into the weekend with an estimated $5.3M, adds 219 theaters this week to 792 venues (766 US, 26 Canada) from 573 last weekend.
Internationally Universal looks to have another strong contender on it hands. Their latest collaboration with Illumination Entertainment, Minions opened Wednesday in Indonesia and Thursday in Australia. Early reports have the origin film pacing ahead of 2013's smash Despicable Me 2, which made $970M worldwide.
