Around-the-World Roundup: 'Interstellar' Opens to $82.9 Million Overseas
Interstellar may have fallen a bit short at the domestic box office, but it did at least managed to dominate overseas this weekend.
Playing at 62 markets, Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic opened to an estimated $82.9 million this weekend. According to distributor Warner Bros., that's on par with Gravity's debuts across the same bucket of territories.
Interstellar's biggest market was South Korea, where it took first place with an impressive $14.4 million. The rest of its major territories were the U.K. ($8.6 million), Russia ($8.9 million), France ($5.3 million), Germany ($4.6 million), Italy ($3.7 million), Australia ($3.7 million), Mexico ($3.1 million), Spain ($2.7 million) and Brazil ($1.9 million).
The movie expands to China on Wednesday, and then reaches Japan on November 22nd. Gravity ultimately earned over $442 million overseas last year; it will be interesting to see if Interstellar can wind up in the same ballpark.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles earned $17.3 million this weekend, which brings its total to $273.2 million. In its second weekend in China, it added $13.6 million to bring its total to a very good $50.3 million. With Japan on the way in February, this has a strong chance of ultimately topping $300 million overseas.
The Maze Runner took in $11.7 million this weekend, and has now earned over $224 million outside of the U.S. Through two weeks in China, its banked $23 million.
