Around-the-World Roundup: 'Resident Evil' Adds to Series Record
After becoming the highest-grossing entry in its series last weekend, Resident Evil: Afterlife slowed a bit but had no problem leading the overseas box office for the third weekend in a row. Eat Pray Love opened in a handful of major territories and moved in to second place, while Inception extended its impressive run and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps had a respectable but unremarkable debut.
Afterlife dipped 39 percent to $24.3 million, with its only noteworthy openings occurring in France ($3.5 million) and Hong Kong ($768,324). It has made $154.1 million overseas, which is more than the first two Resident Evil movies combined. On the worldwide front (domestic plus foreign), Afterlife passed the $200 million mark on Sunday.
In its first major weekend Eat Pray Love earned $12.9 million. This included solid launches in Germany ($2.5 million), Spain ($2 million), France ($1.9 million) and the United Kingdom ($1.8 million). Since opening last month, the Julia Roberts globetrotting drama has earned $20 million overseas, and still has yet to open in most international markets.
Inception was up a tick to $10.6 million thanks to a strong $3.7 million debut in Italy, which is its last major territory. With $486.4 million in foreign earnings, the Christopher Nolan mindbender seems poised to pass $500 million overseas sometime next weekend. Worldwide, Inception has made a remarkable $773.7 million.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps opened to $9.3 million in 41 territories this weekend. While its release was primarily in smaller countries, it did have decent openings in Australia ($1.7 million), Sweden ($875,365) and Brazil ($815,917). The Oliver Stone sequel expands to France, Russia and Mexico this weekend and then the U.K. and Spain the following weekend.
Japanese movie Umizaru 3 (The Last Message) fell a light 27 percent to $8.2 million. Through its first week and a half, Umizaru 3 has made $38 million.
The Last Airbender added another $7.1 million from 37 territories for a foreign total of $168.9 million. This included an impressive $3.1 million opening in Italy. On Sunday, Airbender passed $300 million worldwide.
Despite only opening in Lebanon, Despicable Me was up 21 percent to $6.5 million. This was mostly due to South Korea, where it was up 125 percent to $3.5 million thanks to local holidays. The animated movie is on the verge of crossing the $100 million international mark and is set to open in Germany, Switzerland, South Africa and a handful of other territories next weekend.
In its second weekend, The Town earned $4.5 million from six markets for a total of $7.1 million. Its highlight was a $1.6 million third-place opening in the U.K.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice was off just 19 percent to $4.3 million for a total of $143.8 million overseas. Late last week it pushed past the $200 million mark worldwide, and its total now sits at a solid $206.5 million.
