Friday Report: 'Immortals' Defeats 'Jack,' 'Puss'
Immortals fought its way to a strong first place debut yesterday, leaving Jack and Jill and Puss in Boots in a close race for second. Meanwhile, Clint Eastwood's J. Edgar was unable to translate Leonardo DiCaprio's starpower in to above-average grosses.
Immortals opened to an estimated $15 million on Friday, which is a little over half of 300's $28.1 million start. It's also down from Clash of the Titans's $26.1 million opening day. Both of those movies had the backing of major distributor Warner Bros., though. Immortals, on the other hand, is from upstart Relativity Media, and its debut easily tops Limitless's $6.6 million to set a new opening day record for the company. Immortals will ultimately claim first place this weekend with anywhere from $33 to $38 million.
Jack and Jill edged past Puss in Boots to take second place with an estimated $9.85 million. That's slightly above Adam Sandler and Dennis Dugan's last collaboration, Just Go With It, though opening on Veteran's Day surely helped boost Jack's figure a bit. The movie should wind up with around $25 million for the weekend.
After leading for two weeks in a row, Puss in Boots got knocked down a few spots yesterday. Not that it really matters, as the movie took advantage of the Veteran's Day holiday to improve 15 percent to $9 million. It will wind up around $25 million for the weekend, and has a strong chance of taking second place back from Jack and Jill. The DreamWorks Animation movie has so far made $92.3 million, and will pass $100 million sometime today.
As expected, Tower Heist didn't fall victim to this week's inside baseball Brett Ratner-Eddie Murphy Academy Awards drama. The action comedy fell a so-so 39 percent to an estimated $4.9 million, which brings its eight-day total to $35.6 million. The movie appears to be in line for a $13-14 million weekend gross.
J. Edgar rounded out the Top Five with an estimated $4.25 million. That's right in between Leonardo DiCaprio's Body of Lies ($4.38 million) and director Clint Eastwood's Hereafter ($4.13 million), both of which wound up between $12 and $13 million on their opening weekends. Taking in to account a slight Veteran's Day boost, J. Edgar should finish the weekend at the low-end of that range.
