'Alice' Is a Billionaire
Walt Disney Studios announced this morning that Alice in Wonderland (2010) has become the sixth movie in history to cross the $1 billion mark at the global box office. Alice broke the barrier yesterday, its 85th day of release. Its split breaks down to $332.3 million domestic and $667.7 million foreign. 3D showings have made up 71 percent of the worldwide gross.
Alice in Wonderland joins Avatar, Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest and The Dark Knight in the billionaire club. Alice is the third non-sequel in this group, and the first non-sequel that wasn't directed by James Cameron, who made Avatar and Titanic. Alice also made Johnny Depp the first star to headline two billion dollar grossers, following Dead Man's Chest. Among only Disney releases, Alice ranks second to Dead Man's Chest (though Alice has a higher foreign-only haul).
Though a monster hit in a number of territories, Alice in Wonderland's biggest foreign market has been Japan, where it has held the top spot for six straight weeks. Its current total there stands at $110.7 million. It's also made $64.1 million in the United Kingdom, $46.7 million in France, $42.4 million in Russia and $42 million in Italy. Last weekend, Alice's overall foreign take was down 26 percent to $7.9 million overseas, indicating that there's still some life left in its run.
Domestically, Alice's $332.3 million total is good for 19th on the all-time list (though it doesn't place in the Top 100 when adjusted for ticket price inflation). The movie is set to hit DVD, Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack this Tuesday, June 1.

Trailing by just $1.8 million, Alice in Wonderland is poised to pass The Dark Knight any day now to become the world's fifth highest-grossing movie of all time.
