Seven-Day Summary: Business Booms On 'Wall Street'
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps outbid holdover The Town and disappointing newcomers Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and You Again to take first place this week. Overall business was up five percent from last year, when Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs led in its second week.
The return of Gordon Gekko netted $25.8 million through its first seven days, which was more than double the first-week attendance of 1987 predecessor Wall Street (which was playing in a fifth of the theaters). While Wall Street 2's weekend tally set a gross record for an Oliver Stone movie, it fell behind World Trade Center for the seven-day period.
The Town finished in second place for the week, despite coming in third on the weekend. The Ben Affleck crime drama was off 36 percent to $21.2 million, and its per theater average of $7,355 was tops among all nationwide releases. In 14 days, The Town has snagged a strong $54.3 million, though it trailed similar Boston-set crime movie The Departed by over $9 million through the same point.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole had a relatively slow start, capturing just $19.2 million in spite of its very large release and 3D surcharges. This was less than a third of Happy Feet's opening week and was also significantly behind the animated 3D entry from last September, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs ($35.4 million).
Easy A dipped 40 percent to $13.3 million. The high school comedy has netted $35.4 million in 14 days.
You Again opened to just $10.9 million, which was down from Kristen Bell's other 2010 comedy When in Rome ($15.4 million). The weekend's final new nationwide release, The Virginity Hit, wound up all the way down in 19th place with a mere $456,048 at 700 theaters for a miserable per theater average of $651.
