Around-the-World Roundup: 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' Sees Biggest Debut of Its Series
Debuting in over 30 territories, Resident Evil: Afterlife shot to the top of the foreign box office over the weekend. Inception dropped to second, but an excellent hold in China indicated that its overseas run is far from over. The rest of the field dipped below $10 million, suggesting that the rollicking box office returns from summer are finally starting to slow down.
Resident Evil: Afterlife earned $42.3 million from 3,559 screens, which was by far the biggest debut of its series (though the other movies had more gradual roll-outs). Over a third of this total came from a massive $15.5 million three-day launch in Japan. Other territory highlights included $6.4 million in Russia, $3.3 million in Spain, $2.95 million in Taiwan and $2.6 million in the United Kingdom. In territories where a 3D breakout was available, 3D showings accounted for an average of 81 percent of earnings. The movie has yet to debut in some major markets like France and Germany, and it's aiming to surpass Resident Evil: Extinction's $97.1 million as the series' highest-grossing movie.
Inception added $16.4 million from 7,330 screens in 64 markets. Just over half of Inception's earnings came from its second weekend in China, where it dipped 14 percent to $8.55 million. Its $30.4 million 12-day total makes it distributor Warner Bros. highest-grossing movie ever in China. Its overseas total grew to a massive $448.8 million, putting its worldwide haul (domestic plus foreign) at $731.5 million, good for 37th place on the all-time chart.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice was up 23 percent to $9.1 million, thanks mostly to a $3.4 million opening in China. Since opening in July, Apprentice has earned $127.6 million overseas, helping to off-set its disappointing $62.6 million domestic gross.
The Expendables battled its way to another $8 million overseas for a $130 million total. The total includes $30 million in China and $14.2 million in the UK. Through its first month in theaters, Sylvester Stallone's action movie has racked up an impressive $229 million worldwide.
Despicable Me added $6.6 million from 26 territories, with its debut in Australia accounted for $4.5 million. According to Universal Pictures, Despicable Me has become their top-grossing movie ever in Latin America, though a specific figure was not available. Overall, the animated comedy has earned $82 million overseas, and still has yet to open in most of Europe.
The Last Airbender was off 30 percent to $6.6 million for an overseas total of $150.6 million.
Step Up 3-D fell just 14 percent to an estimated $6.1 million from 37 territories. With $95.5 million overseas, it has passed Step Up 2 the Streets ($92.7 million) to become the highest-grossing entry in the Step Up series.
Salt dipped 34 percent to $5.75 million for an overseas total of $156.3 million. Among Angelina Jolie action movies, it has now topped the final overseas tally for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, though it still trails Mr. & Mrs. Smith and Wanted by large margins.
The Karate Kid continued its impressive run, down 31 percent to $5.6 million for a foreign total of $168.2 million.
Toy Story 3 was off 24 percent to an estimated $5.6 million to bring its phenomenal international total to $632.2 million. On Sunday, it passed Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince to move in to tenth place on the all-time foreign chart. Its worldwide total of $1.0423 billion places it just $24 million away from eclipsing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest to become the fourth-highest grossing worldwide title all-time and Disney's highest-grossing movie ever.
