Around-the-World Roundup: 'Afterlife' Dominates Again
Thanks to a handful of solid openings, Resident Evil: Afterlife had no trouble dominating the international box office for the second straight weekend. Umizaru 3 (The Last Message) managed to finish in second thanks to its impressive debut in its native Japan, while Inception extended its stellar foreign run.
Resident Evil: Afterlife was down just five percent to around $40 million. This included strong openings in Germany ($5.3 million), Mexico ($3.2 million), South Korea ($3.1 million) and Brazil ($2.9 million), along with great second weekend showings in Japan ($5.1 million) and Russia ($4.2 million). On Sunday, Afterlife passed Resident Evil: Extinction's $97.1 million overseas total to become the highest-grossing entry in the series. Then, on Monday, it topped Extinction's $147.7 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total to become the series' top grosser on a worldwide basis. In less than two weeks, Afterlife has earned $103.2 million overseas for a $148.8 million worldwide total.
Japanese action drama Umizaru 3 (The Last Message) had a huge $11.3 million debut on 467 screens in Japan, which was good for second place overseas this weekend. This was a series-best opening in Japan, topping Umizaru's $1.96 million in 2004 and Limit of Love: Umizaru's $8.5 million in 2006.
International phenomenon Inception dipped 38 percent to $10.1 million for an overseas total of $468.1 million. It held on to the top spot in China for the third weekend in a row, earning $4.7 million for a $41.1 million total. Worldwide, Inception has made $753.6 million, and opens in Italy on Friday.
The Last Airbender added $5.7 million from 42 territories for a total of $159 million. By next weekend, the M. Night Shyamalan-directed fantasy adaptation should cross $300 million worldwide.
Though it's in its seventh weekend domestically, The Other Guys has just begun its foreign roll-out. It earned $5.4 million over the weekend, most of which came from the United Kingdom($3.1 million debut) and Australia ($1.6 million second weekend). The Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg action comedy has thus far earned $8.9 million overseas.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice was off 42 percent to an estimated $5.3 million from 53 territories (full foreign saturation). This brought its international total to a solid $137.6 million for a worldwide haul of just over $200 million.
Despicable Me grossed $5.3 million in 29 territories for a total of $88.7 million. This included a $1.5 million fifth-place opening in South Korea, which was well below the openings of prior summer animated hits Shrek Forever After ($5.8 million) and Toy Story 3 ($3.7 million). Since first hitting theaters in July, Despicable Me has earned $88.7 million overseas.
Vampires Suck had it best weekend so far, earning just over $5 million for a total of $19.2 million. Over half of its weekend gross came from a $2.55 million first place debut in Italy.
Salt fell 25 percent to $4.3 million, bringing its foreign total to $162.7 million. Worldwide, it sits at $279.6 million.
Step Up 3-D added an estimated $4.1 million from 38 territories to push its series-best overseas total to an impressive $102 million.
The American had a good $1.6 million first-place start in Spain and a much less impressive $1.07 million third-place launch in Germany for a weekend gross of just over $4 million. Since opening at the beginning of the month, The American has earned $8.4 million overseas.
