Around-the-World Roundup: 'Battleship' Sinks 'Titanic'
Thanks to strong openings in China and Russia, Battleship took the top spot at the overseas box office away from Titanic 3D this weekend. That didn't stop Titanic 3D from adding a healthy amount to its already impressive total, though, and it even managed to retain first place in China ahead of Battleship.
Battleship earned $60 million this weekend to bring its foreign total to $131.1 million. It opened in second in China behind Titanic 3D with $17.7 million, which is Universal's biggest opening ever there (twice as high as their previous best, Fast Five). It was also noticeably up from star Taylor Kitsch's other recent sci-fi effort John Carter. The same couldn't be said for Russia—the movie did have an outstanding $11.2 million start there, but it wasn't quite on par with John Carter. Outside of these new markets, Battleship held on to the top spot in South Korea ($3.5 million), Germany ($2.2 million) and the U.K. ($2.05 million), among many smaller territories. Battleship is currently scheduled to open on May 18 in the U.S.
Titanic 3D added $33.6 million for an impressive total of $225.3 million. Most of that came in China, where the movie took first place with $24.6 million for the five-day weekend. It's now made $105.2 million there through less than two weeks in theaters. Including Monday's grosses, the re-release's worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total has reached $286.3 million.
The Hunger Games continued its solid foreign run with $14.5 million this weekend. It got a boost from a healthy $3.97 million first place debut in Spain. With $217 million in the bank so far, the sci-fi adaptation expands in to Italy next weekend.
Coinciding with its domestic debut, The Lucky One opened to $3.7 million in nine overseas markets this weekend. Its biggest territory was Australia, where the movie had a strong $2.6 million first place opening.
Woody Allen's latest movie To Rome with Love took first place in Italy this weekend with $3.7 million. That's up from last year's Midnight in Paris ($2.9 million), though that's to be expected given the helpful change in setting. The movie is scheduled to open in limited release in the U.S. on June 22.
A week after it got off to a weak $6.2 million start in the U.S., Lockout opened in a handful of foreign markets and earned at least $3.4 million. It played well in France (producer Luc Besson's native country), where it took third place with just shy of $2 million. It wasn't so lucky in the U.K., though, where it opened in seventh with under $1 million.
