'Captain,' 'Harry' Keep Rollin' on Tuesday
Taking advantage of July's strong weekday business, Captain America: The First Avenger drew $7.8 million on Tuesday, extending its lead over Thor as Summer 2011's fastest-grossing superhero movie. Captain's generated $80.6 million in five days, compared to Thor's $76.5 million, X-Men: First Class's $65.6 million and Green Lantern's $63.3 million at the same point. So it's been a solid run for the Marvel Comics movie thus far, but it's not to be overstated: Captain's estimated five-day attendance lies slightly ahead of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and slightly behind The Incredible Hulk.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 added $6.5 million on Tuesday, and its 58 percentage drop from last Tuesday was nearly identical to the last July Potter, Half-Blood Prince. With a 12-day sum of $286.5 million, Deathly Hallows Part 2 ranked third among all-time 12-day hauls, behind The Dark Knight's $333.9 million and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $293.4 million.
At the foreign box office, Deathly Hallows Part 2 raked in $17.9 million on Tuesday, lifting its total to a mighty $595.5 million in 14 days. It surpassed Transformers: Dark of the Moon's foreign total ($585.1 million) to become the second highest-grossing movie of 2011 (behind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides).
Worldwide, Deathly Hallows Part 2 stands at $882 million, moving ahead of Chamber of Secrets to 22nd on the all-time chart. On Wednesday, its 15th day, it will cross the $900 million worldwide mark, topping Avatar's 18-day run as the fastest movie to that milestone.
