Around-the-World Roundup: 'Despicable Me' Conquers World Again
Thanks to school holidays in many areas in Europe, Despicable Me had a great hold and moved back in to first place at the foreign box office. Paranormal Activity 2 dropped to second, while Saw 3D dramatically improved on Saw VI's earnings in its foreign debut. Also, Megamind was well-received in Russia and Ukraine ahead of its domestic opening this Friday.
Despicable Me was up slightly to $21.8 million for a total of over $236 million. Its only major launch came in Japan, where it had a decent $2.8 million second place finish. Despicable Me also took advantage of the holidays in France by increasing 59 percent to $5.1 million for a total of $21.6 million. The animated comedy has made over $480 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign) and will soon be on the verge of crossing the $500 million mark.
Paranormal Activity 2 dipped 32 percent to $15.1 million from 27 territories. This figure included tiny openings in Portugal ($122,250) and Hong Kong($111,817). In two weeks, the supernatural horror sequel has notched $47.5 million overseas for a worldwide total in excess of $115 million, and it is set to open in 11 more territories, including Germany and Taiwan, next weekend.
The Social Network opened in 23 new markets for a total of 48 and had its best weekend thus far, up 42 percent to $14.1 million. It had a strong $2.6 million first place debut in Australia, along with a decent $1.7 million fourth-place start in Russia. It also held well in France (down 22 percent to $1.97 million) and the United Kingdom (off 29 percent to $1.7 million). Overall, The Social Network has made $51.2 million in foreign coin for a worldwide total of over $131 million.
Saw 3D opened to $13.25 million from 25 territories for a total of $14.4 million (including previews). It had a nice $5.8 million first place showing in the U.K., along with a solid $2.2 million second place debut in Russia. Australia and Japan were much less impressive, opening to $909,000 and $864,800, respectively. Still, nearly all of Saw 3D's territories showed significant increases over Saw VI (with Australia being the major exception).
Les Petits Mouchoirs (Little White Lies) had another great weekend in France and was up four percent to $9.5 million. That brings its French total to $21.8 million and its worldwide total, including Switzerland and Belgium, to $22.8 million.
While official numbers aren't currently available, it looks like comic book adaptation Red made over $9 million over the weekend. That included a good $2.4 million start in Germany as well as $1.9 million in the U.K. Red's overseas total reached around $25 million, and it should pass $100 million worldwide next weekend.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole was up a bit to $8.9 million for a foreign total of $66.1 million. This improvement was due in part to a decent $1.1 million opening in South Korea along with weak debuts in France ($2.6 million) and Italy ($558,500).
Megamind scored $7.7 million from just two territories. Most of this came from a strong $6.9 million opening in Russia, which was similar to How to Train Your Dragon but way below Shrek Forever After among DreamWorks Animation's other 2010 titles. It also opened in the Ukraine, where it netted a huge $750,000. Megamind launches domestically and in a handful of Southeast Asia territories this weekend.
