Seven-Day Summary: 'Saw 3D' Quickly Tops 'Saw VI's Total
While it couldn't match most of its series' previous entries, Saw 3D proved there was still some life left in the perennial horror franchise, claiming first place at the box office this week. Paranormal Activity 2 fell to second, while comic book adaptation Red continued its solid run. Overall business was up around three percent from last year, when Michael Jackson's This Is It led with $32.6 million.
Saw 3D earned $28.9 million at 2,808 locations for a $30.6 million total (including Thursday evening previews). This was much lower than the opening weeks for Saw II through Saw V, though it was much higher than Saw VI. In fact, by Tuesday, Saw 3D had already out-grossed Saw VI's $27.7 million final haul.
Paranormal Activity 2 dropped a standard 58 percent to $20.8 million. While it has no chance of reaching Paranormal Activity's $107.9 million tally, the sequel's $69.9 million two-week total is high enough to make Paranormal Activity 3 inevitable.
Red eased 24 percent to $14.9 million in its third week. After settling for third place from Friday through Monday, it moved past Paranormal Activity 2 and held on to second place Tuesday through Thursday. With $63 million in 21 days, Red is now on pace to pass Knowing ($80 million) to become distributor Summit Entertainment's highest-grossing non-Twilight movie ever.
Jackass 3-D once again stumbled, this time plummeting 55 percent to $12.6 million. Overall, the movie has made $105.7 million, though it's still a bit behind the first two Jackass movies after adjusting for ticket price inflation and 3D premiums.
Hereafter was off 43 percent to $8.9 million, which was a steeper decline than Clint Eastwood and Matt Damon's last collaboration, Invictus. Still, its two-week total of $24.7 million is an improvement over Invictus's $19 million.
Conviction expanded to 565 locations but only grossed $2.6 million. In three weeks, the Hilary Swank drama has made $3.2 million and expands to 672 theaters this weekend.
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest opened in 13th place with $1.25 million at 155 venues. This was off a bit from The Girl Who Played with Fire's $1.35 million start at around two thirds the venues.
