Around-the-World Roundup: 'Spidey' Adds $127.5 Million Overseas
Coinciding with its strong domestic debut, The Amazing Spider-Man expanded throughout most of the rest of the world and earned an estimated $127.5 million overseas this weekend.
The movie's best launch came in the U.K., where its $18.1 million haul was about on par with that of Spider-Man 3. It also opened nicely in France ($8 million), Italy ($5.7 million) and Spain ($4.1 million), among major European markets.
In Asia, The Amazing Spider-Man had the best opening ever in Indonesia with $4.5 million, and it also got off to an outstanding start in Malaysia ($3.1 million). Among its holdover markets there, its added $7.9 million in South Korea and $4.4 million in Japan.
In Latin America, the reboot debuted to $9.6 million in Mexico and $6.9 million in Brazil, both of which rank in or close to the Top 10 openings ever.
The movie also had good starts in Russia ($10.8 million) and Australia ($7.5 million), though neither were overly impressive (it wound up in second place in Australia behind Ted).
The movie has earned $201.9 million overseas through Sunday, and debuts in 15 new markets next weekend.
Ice Age: Continental Drift continued to bank serious cash overseas ahead of its July 13 domestic debut. The fourth entry in the franchise grossed $82.4 million from 48 markets, which brings its foreign total to $200.1 million. It had the best debut of the year in Germany ($14.5 million), and held well in France ($9.1 million), Mexico ($5.9 million), Brazil ($5.7 million) and Australia ($4.9 million). It's also already earned $11.6 million from previews in the U.K., which are included in the movie's total. Aside from its U.S. opening, Ice Age: Continental Drift expands in to 29 new countries this weekend.
Ted is already on its way to becoming one of the highest-grossing movies of the year domestically, and now the raunchy comedy is looking like it could be a huge hit overseas as well. The movie opened to $13.1 million in Australia (including $4.5 million from previews), which makes it Universal's biggest opening ever in that country. Its only other debut was in Taiwan, where its $1.9 million qualifies as the best comedy opening ever there. Ted's next major launches come in Russia, Germany and the U.K. on the first weekend of August, and it is set to make a gradual international roll-out in the next few months.
After bombing in the U.S., Katy Perry: Part of Me tried to save some face overseas this weekend with $2.3 million from four markets. That includes a paltry $707,000 in the U.K. along with a strong $1.4 million seven-day start in Australia.
