Friday Report: Good, Not Great Start for 'Ice Age'
The weekend's only new release, Ice Age: Continental Drift, got off to a solid start on Friday, though it didn't reach the levels of previous animated movies this Summer. Meanwhile, The Amazing Spider-Man had a fairly average drop-off, and Ted continued to play well at the start of its third weekend.
The fourth Ice Age movie earned $16.5 million on its first day in theaters. That's better than the opening day for the original Ice Age ($13.5 million) and Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs ($13.8 million), but it's noticeably off from Ice Age: The Meltdown's $21.8 million. It's also down from all three previous animated movies this year: Brave ($24.6 million), Madagascar 3 ($20.7 million) and The Lorax ($17.5 million). For the weekend, Ice Age: Continental Drift is poised to earn at least $43 million.
The Amazing Spider-Man fell 50 percent to $10.3 million, which brings its 11-day total to $176.2 million. It currently trails all three previous Spider-Man movies by at least $52 million through the same point.
Ted eased 35 percent to an estimated $6.9 million. Remarkably, the movie's $143.7 million total is still ahead of The Hangover's $134.5 million.
Magic Mike added $3.41 million on Friday, which is off a somewhat light 44 percent from the previous week. The movie has now earned $86.2 million, and with that respectable hold it seems very well-positioned to reach $100 million eventually.
With tough competition coming from Ice Age, Brave fell 48 percent to $3.26 million. The movie's total reached $188.2 million, and it's on track to pass $200 million sometime next weekend.
On its second Friday, Savages dropped 53 percent to an estimated $2.7 million. That's not a good hold, but it could have been much worse considering the very poor word-of-mouth the movie has been receiving. The Oliver Stone crime drama has made $25.4 million through eight days.
