Around-the-World Roundup: 'Paranormal Activity 2' Scares Up Solid Foreign Debut
Coinciding with its huge domestic haul, Paranormal Activity 2 debuted in 21 territories, including a handful of major ones, to take first place at the foreign box office. Despicable Me and The Social Network held well without the aid of significant new markets.

Paranormal Activity 2 earned $22.3 million at 2,752 locations over the weekend. Its biggest openings were in the United Kingdom ($5.9 million), Australia ($2.6 million), France ($2.5 million), Russia ($2.1 million), Mexico ($1.9 million) and Italy ($1.6 million). Compared to the first Paranormal Activity, which had a gradual roll-out late last year on its way to over $85 million, the horror sequel's openings were about the same in the U.K. and Australia, up in Russia and Mexico, and down in France and Italy. Paranormal Activity 2 expands to Portugal, Hong Kong, Singapore and various Middle Eastern territories next weekend.

Despicable Me eased 17 percent to $20.6 million from 44 territories. Its biggest opening was in Portugal, where it had a $537,115 first place showing, while it also had a strong $4.1 million second weekend in the U.K. On Monday, Despicable Me passed the $200 million mark overseas, and it reached the $450 million worldwide (domestic plus foreign) milestone yesterday.

The Social Network slowed 19 percent to $9.95 million on 2,130 screens in 25 territories. While it opened in seven small territories, its top performance was in France, where it dipped 28 percent to $2.5 million in its second weekend. Since opening at the beginning of the month, The Social Network has earned $32.2 million overseas for a worldwide total of $106 million.

Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps was up 33 percent to $9.6 million, thanks to decent debuts in Germany ($2.1 million), Italy ($1.6 million) and South Korea ($979,258). Overall, the Oliver Stone sequel has made $62.2 million overseas.

Comedy/drama Les Petits Mouchoirs (Little White Lies), starring Marion Cotillard, managed a Top Five finish with $9.53 million, $9.1 million of which came from its first place opening in native France. This was the second-best French debut for a local production this year behind Camping 2.

Eat Pray Love continued its respectable overseas tour with an $8.3 million haul on 3,247 screens in 71 territories. On Sunday, it passed the $100 million mark, which brought its worldwide total to just under $181 million.

In its best foreign weekend yet, Life as We Know It grossed $8.5 million from 22 territories for a total of $17.9 million. This included solid openings in Germany ($2 million) and Australia ($1.9 million).

Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole added $8.3 million from 54 markets for a total of $53.6 million overseas. It had a disappointing $1.2 million fifth place start in the U.K. along with a slightly better $1.1 million third place debut in Spain. It's now passed $100 million worldwide, and is scheduled to open this weekend in France, Italy and South Korea.
