'Harry Potter' Ranks Third on All-Time Seven-Day Chart
A week that started as a record-breaker for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ended as a third-place finisher, but it still exceeded the next fastest-grossing Potter, Half-Blood Prince, by over 27 percent.
Deathly Hallows Part II's first week came in at $226.1 million, slotting behind The Dark Knight's $238.6 million and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen's $228.4 million on the all-time seven-day chart. Normalized for ticket-price inflation, Deathly Hallows Part 2 would rank tenth, effectively on par with The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, but it would still remain tops for the Potter franchise.
Here's how the week played out: Deathly Hallows Part 2 had the top-grossing Friday ever, by a wide margin ($91.1 million), followed by the No. 9 Saturday ($42.4 million), the No. 4 Sunday ($35.7 million), the No. 10 Monday ($18.0 million), the No. 6 Tuesday ($15.4 million), the No. 38 Wednesday ($12.3 million) and the No. 48 Thursday ($11.2 million).
Thursday had cooled by 87.7 percent since Friday for Deathly Hallows Part 2. While that was by no means a record Friday-to-Thursday slide, it was much steeper than The Dark Knight's 75.5 percent and on par with The Twilight Saga: New Moon's 87.3 percent.
Deathly Hallows Part 2's trajectory currently points to a second-weekend drop of around 70 percent, which pegs it for the high-$40-to-low-$50 million range and a potential second-place showing to Captain America: The First Avenger. That speaks to the fan frenzy of opening day more than anything else. The previous July Potters, Half-Blood Prince and Order of the Phoenix, fell 62 and 58 percent, respectively, but they burnt off the fan frenzy before their opening weekends by debuting on Wednesdays.
At the foreign box office, Deathly Hallows Part 2 added $26.2 million on Thursday, bringing its tally to $452.7 million in just nine days. Throw in domestic, and the movie's worldwide haul is $678.8 million, already ranking 46th on the all-time chart. On Friday, it will surpass the lifetime gross of the biggest Twilight movie, New Moon ($710 million).
