Academy / UCLA Contemporary Doc Series Continues
Beverly Hills, CA—Academy Award® nominee Asylum and Lost Boys of Sudan will be screened for the February 9 installment of the Contemporary Documentary Series, presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, the Academy Foundation and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, at 7:30 p.m., in the James Bridges Theater on the UCLA campus. Admission is free and open to the public.
Directed by Sandy McLeod, Asylum humanizes the struggle of African women through the story of Baaba, a Ghanaian woman, seeking a marriage blessing from her estranged father. Ultimately forced to seek asylum in the United States to avoid ritual female genital circumcision and an arranged marriage, Baaba was caught by the I.N.S. with a false passport.
Lost Boys of Sudan follows the day-to-day struggle of two Sudanese refugees during their first year in America . After choosing to be airlifted to the U.S., the boys are confronted by the stark cultural differences between their homeland and suburban Houston. Directors Megan Mylan and Jon Shenk capture the boys wrestling with their mistaken notion of America as "heaven" and striving towards a more promising future.
All screenings in the series are free and open to the public. They will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the James Bridges Theater, in Westwood, on the northeast corner of the UCLA campus, near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Hilgard Avenue . Parking is available for $7 in Lot 3, adjacent to the James Bridges Theater. For more information, call (310) 247-3600 or (310) 206-FILM.
