Around-the-World Roundup: 'Madagascar 3' Hangs On to Foreign Lead
Even without any major openings, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted held well and claimed the top spot at the overseas box office for the second-straight weekend.
The animated three-quel added $53 million from 43 territories for a new total of $157 million. Its top market was Russia with $9.2 million, and it fell a light 27 percent to $6.2 million in France. It also grossed $5.2 million in Mexico, $3.9 million in Brazil, $2.6 million in Argentina and $2.2 million in South Korea. Its top new market was the United Arab Emirates, where it earned $1.4 million (a new record for an animated movie). Madasgascar 3's next major opening is Spain in July, followed by Japan and Italy in August.
Snow White and the Huntsman earned $31.2 million from 57 territories this weekend. It had solid debuts in Russia ($6.1 million), France ($5.1 million) and Japan ($4.7 million), and has now grossed $124.6 million from overseas markets. The movie expands in to Australia and New Zealand next weekend, and then Italy next month.
In its third weekend, Prometheus added $25.2 million for a total of $128.6 million. Its $3.2 million opening in Mexico and $2.9 million debut in Brazil were both solid, though neither were home runs.
International hit MIB 3 raked in another $19.7 million this weekend from 79 markets, which brings its foreign total to $391.6 million. It's now a few days away from passing Hancock ($396.4 million) to become Will Smith's second-highest grossing movie ever overseas behind Independence Day ($511.2 million).
Domestic openers Rock of Ages and That's My Boy also hit a few overseas markets this weekend. Rock of Ages earned $4.1 million from 10 territories, which includes middling starts in the U.K. ($1.64 million) and Australia ($1.4 million). That's My Boy also debuted to $1.4 million in Australia, which is off from recent Sandler movies Grown Ups ($2.4 million), Just Go With It ($2.4 million) and Jack and Jill ($1.8 million).
