‘Alice in Wonderland’ Grows Past $300M
Alice in Wonderland busted past the $300 million mark on Thursday, its 28th day of release. The fantasy ranks as the 12th fastest picture ever to reach the milestone. It's also the second 3D-infused title to make over $300 million, following Avatar, which reached that level in just 15 days.
During the week, Alice in Wonderland was buoyed by the schools' Easter and spring breaks like most movies and has seen its smallest weekday drop-offs yet. It generated $2.07 million on Thursday, down 20 percent from the previous Thursday, and its total stands at $301.5 million. It also saw an eight percent uptick from Wednesday, following the pattern of its previous two weeks.
Around two-thirds of Alice in Wonderland's gross has come from its 3D presentations, which means that the 3D ticket-price premium alone has likely accounted for over $60 million of the total gross. That also means that Alice hasn't had the attendance of other movies that have grossed $300 million, and that the movie's still a tad behind the attendance of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, the previous collaborative high from Alice director Tim Burton and star Johnny Depp.
Alice in Wonderland's 2D share is about to rise, because Thursday was the movie's final day at many 3D sites. As of April 2, its 3D count drops from 1,436 to around 600 to make room for Clash of the Titans' opening.
