Around-the-World Roundup: 'Eat Pray Love' Trots to Global Top Spot
Thanks to a few major launches each, Eat Pray Love and Despicable Me moved to the top of another slow weekend at the foreign box office. Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps also passed reigning champion Resident Evil: Afterlife, while Inception reached another noteworthy milestone.
Eat Pray Love had its best weekend yet, grossing $18.5 million from 4,289 screens. Its 33 percent increase over last weekend can be attributed to 24 new territory openings, including Australia ($3.4 million) and Russia ($1.6 million). Since beginning its run in early August, the Julia Roberts globetrotting drama has racked up a solid $64.8 million, though it still lags way behind the actress's past overseas hits like Pretty Woman ($285 million), Notting Hill ($248 million), My Best Friend's Wedding ($172 million) and Runaway Bride ($157 million).
After sitting on the sidelines all summer, Despicable Me continued its expansion throughout Europe and netted $17.8 million over the weekend. This included strong first place debuts in France ($5.7 million) and Spain ($3.5 million). Despicable Me has now earned $136.8 million overseas for a worldwide (domestic plus foreign) total of $383.5 million, and it opens this weekend in the United Kingdom and Italy.
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole expanded to 38 total markets and was up 22 percent to $11.7 million. It opened in first place in Mexico ($2.1 million) and second place in Brazil ($1.6 million). This upcoming weekend it looks to increase its $26.1 million foreign total by launching in Germany.
Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps added another $10.7 million from 59 territories, including a $2.8 million first place debut in the U.K. and a $2.2 million start in Spain. Through its third weekend, the Oliver Stone-directed sequel has earned $37.4 million overseas.
After leading for the last four weekends, Resident Evil: Afterlife fell 49 percent to an estimated $8 million. Afterlife's $258.2 million worldwide total has now eclipsed that of Resident Evil: Apocalypse ($129.4 million) and Resident Evil ($102.4 million) combined.
Knight & Day fell off the international radar a while ago but came back in a big way this weekend with openings in Italy ($1.26 million) and Japan ($5.97 million). This added up to a $7.2 million weekend for the Tom Cruise-Cameron Diaz action comedy, which has now earned $160.6 million overseas.
In milestone news, Inception crossed the $800 million mark worldwide over the weekend. With an $804.3 million total, the Christopher Nolan mindbender now sits at 26th place on the all-time chart.
