'Paranormal Activity 2' Moves Forward with New Director Announcement...
Tod "Kip" Williams has signed on to direct Paranormal Activity 2, due in theaters on Oct. 22. Oren Peli, writer-director of the 2009 supernatural horror hit Paranormal Activity, made the announcement this morning via the movie's official Web site.
The Door in the Floor is Tod Williams' previous directorial effort, and it made $3.9 million in 2004. His only other feature credit is The Adventures of Sebastian Cole, which grossed a little over $100,000 back in 1999.
"I have some awesome news for the fans of Paranormal Activity—director Kip Williams will join us for the next chapter of the story," Peli wrote. "We are thrilled to have Kip working with us. He is the guy we want at the helm, because he knows exactly what we want to deliver to the fans… and I can't wait to be a part of what he's putting together."
Paranormal Activity was produced for a mere $15,000 (though it's not known how much more it cost to make it distribution-ready), but ultimately grossed over $107.9 million, presumably making it one of the most profitable movies in recent memory in terms of return on investment. Distributor Paramount Pictures may hope to draw big crowds again for Paranormal Activity 2, but similar sequels like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 ($26.4 million) and The Grudge 2 ($39.1 million) failed to live up to the standards of their predecessors.
While plot details are being kept under wraps for Paranormal Activity 2, Peli did offer a brief comment on his post: "I don't want to spoil the story but I promise it'll surprise you," he wrote. "Stay tuned."
