'War of Gods' and Others Set for 2011, 'Morning Glory' Pushed Back...
Universal Pictures officially added three movies from Rogue Pictures to their 2011 slate today. Dramatic comedy Kids in America launches Jan. 28, thriller The Dark Fields opens Mar. 18, and fantasy epic War of Gods attacks theaters Nov. 11. Paramount Pictures also made an adjustment to their release schedule today, moving comedy Morning Glory from July 30 to Nov 12.
War of Gods (a tentative title), featuring Henry Cavill (The Tudors), Kellan Lutz (Twilight) and Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), follows Greek hero Theseus as he battles imprisoned titans seeking to take over the world. This announcement comes at a time when Greek mythology is experiencing a bit of a resurgence at the movies, with Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief grossing over $200 million worldwide and the Clash of the Titans remake about to open. Director Tarsem Singh is known for bringing a unique visual flair to his projects like The Cell ($61.3 million) and The Fall ($2.3 million) and the music video for R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion." Set to be in 3D, War of Gods currently shares the Nov. 11 weekend with the animated Arthur Christmas, also in 3-D.
Starring Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, The Dark Fields, based off a novel by Alan Glynn, follows a former cocaine addict who discovers a drug that drastically improves his intellectual and physical abilities. This is the fourth movie from director Neil Burger, who had a hit with The Illusionist ($39.7 million) in 2006, but whose The Lucky Ones ($266,967) and Interview with the Assassin ($48,058) failed to gain much traction. The Dark Fields is scheduled to open against Rango, an animated movie from Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp.
Kids in America (tentative title) features Topher Grace as a recent college graduate pursuing his dream girl at a Labor Day weekend party. Anna Faris plays his sister, and Michelle Trachtenberg, Michael Biehn, Chris Pratt, Dan Fogler and Michael Ian Black also appear. The Factory, a thriller starring John Cusack, also opens January 28.
Directed by Roger Michell and produced by J.J. Abrams, Morning Glory stars Rachel McAdams as a television producer tasked with improving a morning news show despite the ongoing feuds between the shows high-profile anchors, played by Harrison Ford and Diane Keaton. Morning Glory will now open against Tony Scott-directed thriller Unstoppable and the limited release of Disney's Tangled.
