New Entries Struggle, 'Out' Performs
Looks like yarn-haired, anthropomorphic emotions and extinct animals will prove tougher than metallic endoskeletons and six-packed strippers over the long Fourth of July holiday.
Pulling into the weekend Disney is reporting that Inside Out made $12.5M on Friday ($7.72M on Thursday) while Universal's Jurassic World made $11.8M on Friday ($6.9M Thursday). Unless JW has another phenomenal Saturday/Sunday Inside Out will finally make it to #1 on the box-office chart, three weeks after its release.
That slow rise to #1 is a good omen for the future of the Pixar film as it joins other long-legged films such as Disney's 2013 juggernaut Frozen, the Best Picture of 2012 Argo, and 2010's True Grit (the Coen Bros. best grossing film).
Of the two major newcomers Paramount is reporting that Terminator Genisys was just behind World, making $10.6M on Friday ($6.5M Thurs). Magic Mike XXL is a little further back in the pack, with $6.2M on Friday ($5.7M Thursday).
At this rate Terminator Genisys will end the weekend even lower than thought yesterday with $43M. That was $12M lower than the original estimates had placed the film.
Though the Channing Tatum sequel to Magic Mike, a surprise hit 2012, led the pack early in the week it appears its fanbase is done with it and now has to go celebrate the Fourth with their families.
Ted 2 claims $4.5M on Friday ($3.3M Thursday) for Universal, the only dour note for that studio of late, but good enough for fifth place.
Max, the service dog story that seems like a perfect Independence Day choice for some, made $2.6M on Friday ($1.8M Thursday).
