Around-the-World Roundup: 'Skyfall' Nears New Bond Record Overseas
The big story this weekend may be Skyfall's record-setting domestic debut, but that doesn't change the fact that the movie's real strength continues to be its foreign performance. The 23rd James Bond adventure added $90 million from 80 markets this weekend for a new total of $429.6 million, which puts it a day away from passing Casino Royale ($431 million) to become the highest-grossing Bond movie ever overseas.*
Skyfall's best market was once again Bond's native U.K., where the movie eased 30 percent to $18.2 million. It's now the highest-grossing movie of the year there with $117.5 million, and it's on pace to eventually pass Avatar's $150 million record. It was also impressive in Germany, where it dipped 30 percent to an estimated $15.1 million; Germany is now the movie's second-highest-grossing market with just under $44 million. Finally, in its third outing in France it dropped 46 percent to $8.2 million for a total of $42.5 million.
Rolling in its domestic earnings, Skyfall has already earned $518.6 million worldwide, and it will pass Casino Royale's record $599 million by the end of the week. Using some very modest projections for the existing markets and the upcoming ones (China, Japan and Australia), it's likely that Skyfall will ultimately earn over $900 million worldwide.
Argo expanded in to a half-dozen major markets this weekend and earned $12 million. It did decent business in France ($2.5 million) and the U.K. ($2 million), but was unimpressive in Italy and Russia (both under $1 million). It also barely registered in Mexico ($552,000) and Brazil ($479,000). Argo has so far earned $27.1 million overseas, and the hope is that the movie ultimately closes north of Ben Affleck's last directorial effort The Town ($62 million).
Domestic hit Wreck-It Ralph grossed $11.2 million from 18 markets this weekend, which represents 17 percent of its foreign potential. The Disney Animation movie is now at $26.3 million.
While Ralph is still at a very early point in its run, Hotel Transylvania is already firmly established overseas. The animated comedy added $11.1 million from 58 markets, and was buoyed by a very good $2.6 million start in Italy. So far, Hotel Transylvania has earned $129.6 million.
Here Comes the Boom grossed $4 million in its official foreign debut this weekend. It had a strong $2.3 million opening in Germany, but tanked in the U.K. with just $750,000.
Over a month ahead of its U.S. debut, Cirque Du Soleil: Worlds Away debuted to $1.5 million in Japan. That was good for third place on the weekend chart there, and first among imports.
*Correction: A previous version of this story had Casino Royale's overseas total at $427 million, which would have given Skyfall the Bond record on Sunday instead of Monday.
