'Gravity,' 'Hustle' Lead 2013 Oscar Nominations
At the crack of dawn this morning, the nominations were the 86th Academy Awards were announced. Box office hits Gravity and American Hustle led the way with 10 nominations each.

The nine Best Picture nominees have earned a combined $642.1 million so far. In comparison, last year's nine nominees had grossed $620.4 million, though nominations were unveiled six days earlier.

Gravity is by far the highest-grossing Best Picture nominee: after setting an October opening weekend record with $55.8 million, 's space thriller received great word-of-mouth and has now reached $256.3 million. Warner Bros. is re-releasing the movie in to at least 900 locations on Friday.

Captain Phillips and American Hustle are the other two Best Picture nominees to have earned over $100 million so far. Captain Phillips was re-released in to 903 theaters on Wednesday, though its upcoming DVD/Blu-ray release could keep it from adding too much more to its box office total. On the other hand, American Hustle is coming off an $8.3 million weekend, and should earn a lot more before the end of its run.

The Wolf of Wall Street ranks fourth with $80.7 million. The controversial Martin Scorsese movie has been holding well, and it should have no problem getting past $100 million now that it's received five Oscar nominations.

12 Years a Slave and Philomena have so far earned $39 million and $22.3 million, respectively. Both should benefit a bit from the nominations—Philomena is currently in nationwide release, while 12 Years a Slave will be getting a re-release this weekend. Meanwhile, Dallas Buyers Club has essentially ended its run at $16.8 million, and it's unclear what the expansion plan is here.

The movies that stand to gain the most from their Best Picture nominations are Her (2013) and Nebraska. Her (2013) was a bit disappointing in its nationwide expansion this past weekend, while Nebraska still hasn't had a nationwide release. These Best Picture nominations could get some moviegoers to give these two a second look.

The 86th Academy Awards will be held on Sunday, March 2nd in Hollywood, California. Ellen DeGeneres is hosting for the second time.
