Around-the-World Roundup: 'Potter' Magic Charms Again
Despite another huge decline, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 emerged victorious overseas for the third weekend in a row. Tangled held in second thanks to a solid debut in France, while Megamind was less-than-heroic in a handful of major new markets. This likely was Potter's last weekend on top, as The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader opens in 59 markets (including 11 of the top 16) this weekend.
Deathly Hallows Part 1 fell 52 percent to $54.8 million from 63 territories. Its top holdover was France, where it led with $9.4 million for a $31.1 million total. Other significant first place finishes were in the United Kingdom ($5.9 million), Germany ($5.2 million), Australia ($3.4 million) and Brazil ($2.1 million), while the movie had a strong second place showing in Japan ($5.4 million). In less than three weeks, Deathly Hallows Part 1 has notched an impressive overseas total of $469.8 million and a worldwide (domestic plus foreign) tally in excess of $715 million.
Tangled earned $25.2 million from 15 territories (which accounted for 35 percent of the foreign market). By far its best opening came from France, where it took second place with $7.5 million. In Russia, Tangled added $5.6 million for a total of $16.5 million, which remarkably made it Disney's highest-grossing animated movie ever there. In Italy, the movie grossed $2.7 million for a total of just under $6 million, including previews. Through its second weekend, Tangled has made $45.4 million overseas, and expands in to German-speaking Europe this weekend.
After fading from the charts last weekend, Megamind surged back with $15.8 million at 3,277 locations in 27 territories. Unfortunately, its comeback was more due to its release in a handful of key territories than any impressive earnings. It failed to open in first place in the U.K. ($4.5 million), Brazil ($2.1 million) and Germany ($1.4 million), and it underwhelmed in Spain ($2 million) as well. In all four of these markets, Megamind's tally was notably lower than similarly-themed Despicable Me. Since it began its gradual overseas rollout at the end of October, Megamind has earned $48.6 million and is set to open in Australia this weekend.
