Around-the-World Roundup: 'Deathly Hallows' Scores Top Non-Summer Opening Ever
The seventh Harry Potter got off to an enchanting foreign start over the weekend, earning $205 million on 19,200 screens in 91 markets (including $4.3 million on 101 IMAX screens). That's the top-grossing foreign opening ever for a movie released outside of the summer season, and it's the fourth-biggest-grossing international opening ever behind Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince ($235 million), Spider-Man 3 ($230.5 million), and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End ($216 million). Add in its domestic take, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 has already made a staggering $330 million worldwide.
Not surprisingly, Harry Potter's most lucrative territory was the United Kingdom, where it scored $28 million on 1,852 screens. According to distributor Warner Bros., that was the highest-grossing three-day opening in U.K. history. It also had the U.K.'s top-grossing single day ever on Saturday with $10.6 million.
Deathly Hallows Part 1 also had a massive debut in Germany, grossing $23 million on 1,450 screens. That's the fourth biggest-grossing opening ever in Germany and second-best for the franchise, behind Half-Blood Prince ($23.9 million).
Deathly Hallows Part 1 had franchise-best starts in Australia, Russia and, for the three-day weekend, Italy. The movie made $15.1 million on 610 screens in Australia, which was the second biggest-grossing opening weekend of all time there. It earned $12.7 million on 1,133 screens in Russia, while in Italy it made $10.2 million on 935 screens.
Japan was Deathly Hallows Part 1's fourth-highest territory, conjuring $14.6 million on 885 screens. In China, the movie notched $9 million on 3,100 screens, though that's currently a rough estimate.
Deathly Hallows Part 1 grossed $10.1 million on 1,833 screens in Mexico, which was slightly behind Half-Blood Prince's opening. It also scored $8.1 million on 968 screens in Spain, which trailed Goblet of Fire's start.
"We are thrilled by the enthusiastic response of international audiences," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, Warner Bros.'s President of International Distribution, in a press release. "It's a testament to the extraordinary vision of J.K. Rowling; the talents of the filmmakers, cast and everyone involved in the production; and to the hard work of our distribution and marketing teams around the world."
With a $5.75 billion worldwide total over seven movies, Harry Potter is by far the highest-grossing franchise ever.
With Harry Potter dominating the foreign scene, most of the other current releases suffered. Due Date fell 47 percent to $9.4 million on 3,468 screens. It didn't have any significant new openings, but it did put up decent repeat showings in the U.K. ($1.9 million), Germany ($1.7 million) and France ($1.6 million). Since debuting at the beginning of the month, the Todd Phillips comedy has earned $62.2 million.
Resident Evil: Afterlife burst back onto the scene with a $9.1 million weekend, $9 million of which came from a big start in China. With a $225.2 million total, Afterlife is just $12.5 million away from equaling the overseas earnings of all three previous Resident Evil movies combined.
Unstoppable was hardest hit by Harry Potter, plummeting 60 percent to $7.7 million for a total of $31.6 million. It should bounce back this coming weekend, though, when it opens in the U.K., Russia and India.
Red added approximately $7 million to bring its overseas total to around $60 million. Nearly half of its weekend came from a strong $3 million second-place opening in France, where Deathly Hallows Part 1 is delayed a week.
Thanks to an impressive $3.4 million five-day start in Italy, Saw 3D earned an estimated $6.9 million on 1,934 screens this weekend. That lifted its foreign total to $57.2 million and its worldwide total to over $102 million, making it the sixth Saw movie to cross the $100 million worldwide threshold.
