Arthouse Audit: 'Dragon Tattoo' Best of Weak Bunch Again
With no significant new entries, holdover The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo led all limited releases for a third straight weekend. Oscar-winner The Secret in Their Eyes and documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop saw minimal second weekend declines, The Joneses and The Perfect Game plummeted, and Paper Man was paper thin in its debut.
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ranked 16th on the overall weekend chart, grossing $621,749 on 181 theaters (up 29 from last weekend) for a 38-day total of $3.9 million. It was down 1.5 percent from last weekend, though, which was its first weekend-to-weekend decline, and its per site average of $3,345 was its lowest yet.
The Secret in Their Eyes added 23 sites for a total of 33, and subsequently increased 115 percent over last weekend to $360,056. After two weekends, the Best Foreign Language Oscar winner from Argentina has grossed $592,864, and distributor Sony Pictures Classics will likely add more theaters in the coming weeks.
Expanding to 77 locations, comedy City Island was up 20 percent to $314,007, its best weekend gross thus far. Through its sixth weekend, the Anchor Bay release has made $1.2 million.
The Joneses, which disappointed in its debut last weekend, fell a relatively steep 43 percent, grossing $290,016. The Perfect Game took an even worse hit, losing nearly half its theaters and dropping 59 percent to $207,329. Through two weekends, The Joneses and The Perfect Game have made $984,767 and $841,246, respectively.
Exit Through the Gift Shop, on the other hand, impressed in its second weekend, down 14 percent to $146,919. The documentary's per-theater average of $13,356 was tops among all releases. In 10 days, Exit Through the Gift Shop has grossed $389,226.
Paper Man, a comedy starring Jeff Daniels, Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone and Lisa Kudrow, opened to a terrible $8,613 at three locations. It seems unfathomable that a movie with this level of talent could open so poorly (Reynolds' two most recent movies grossed over $150 million each, and he's the lead in next summer's big-budget Green Lantern movie), but slight, last-minute marketing seems to have driven Paper Man to an early grave.
In My Sleep ($9,285), Best Worst Movie ($5,503), The Good, the Bad, the Weird ($4,775), Behind the Burly Q ($3,958) and Boogie Woogie ($1,776) each opened at single theaters, though none found substantial audiences.
