Around-the-World Roundup: 'Expendables 2' Flexes Muscles Overseas
The Expendables 2 reached a handful of major new markets this weekend and held on to first place at the overseas box office. Meanwhile, The Dark Knight Rises continued to inch closer to the $1 billion worldwide mark ahead of its openings in China and Italy this week.
The Expendables 2 earned at least $25.9 million from 36 territories this weekend. It opened in first place in France ($6.1 million), Spain ($2.3 million) and India ($1.8 million). Also, through less than two weeks it has already passed its predecessor's total in Russia ($14.1 million vs. $13.7 million). So far, the action hero team-up has earned over $66 million overseas.
The Dark Knight Rises added $16 million for a new foreign total of $520 million. Its total in the United Kingdom reached $82.1 million, which makes it the top movie of 2012 (ahead of The Avengers) and the highest-grossing superhero movie ever there. Through Sunday the movie's worldwide total is $941.3 million, and with openings in China on Monday (figures aren't yet available) and Italy on Wednesday the conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy should reach $1 billion worldwide in the next few weeks.
Total Recall grossed $14.3 million this weekend to bring its total to $80.3 million. It debuted in first place in Australia with $2.5 million and second place in Germany with $2.2 million.
Brave added $14.6 million, which brought its total past the $200 million mark ($212.3 million). Including its $230.2 million domestic gross, it's the 11th-straight Pixar movie to earn more than $400 million worldwide. Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted also had a nice weekend, earning $13.9 million from 37 territories for a new total of $371.4 million. It opened to $8 million over its first five days in Italy, which is a great start there.
Prometheus finally landed in Japan, where it has grossed a huge $9.6 million since opening late last week. The movie has so far earned $215 million overseas.
Playing in 31 territories, comedy sensation Ted banked another $9.8 million for a new total of $155.7 million. Worldwide, the movie has passed $370 million, and will ultimately wind up way north of $400 million. That will make it Universal's highest-grossing movie of 2012 ahead of mega-budget movies Snow White and the Huntsman (wrapping up its run at around $395 million) and Battleship ($302.8 million).
Another Universal movie, The Bourne Legacy, grossed $9.2 million in 24 markets this weekend for an early total of $43.6 million. Its only major opening was in Mexico, where it took second place with $1.4 million. The reboot/spin-off expands in to Russia and a handful of smaller markets next weekend.
