Around-the-World Roundup: ‘Clash,’ ‘Alice’ Reign Again
With no major new releases, Clash of the Titans stayed atop the foreign box office for the fourth weekend in a row, and Alice in Wonderland continued its remarkable run, though comedy Camping 2 had an impressive opening in France.
Clash of the Titans fell 39 percent to $33.5 million from 10,150 screens in 61 markets. This includes a solid $3 million debut in Japan and a $1.1 million launch in the United Arab Emirates, which represents the third-best opening ever in that territory behind Spider-Man 3 and Fast and Furious. Through its fourth weekend, Clash has banked $242.6 million and will pass 300's $245.5 million foreign take early this week. Clash has one more major opening to look forward to—Brazil on May 21—but its reign at the top of the foreign box office will finally come to an end this weekend when Iron Man 2 launches in over 50 international territories.
Alice in Wonderland came in second place internationally, easing 19 percent to $27.4 million in 53 markets. It was buoyed by a strong $6 million debut in Brazil, which represents the best start in that territory since The Twilight Saga: New Moon opened to $6.9 million last November. Alice also continued to draw a huge audience in Japan, declining 22 percent to $10.9 million in its second weekend. Alice has now made $549.3 million internationally. Add in its domestic haul, and its worldwide gross is $877 million, putting it on pace to easily rank among the ten highest-grossing movies ever worldwide (currently sitting at No. 18).
French comedy Camping 2 opened to $10.8 million, $10.5 million of which came from 781 screens in France. The sequel to Camping, which made $37.9 million in 2006, had the second-best opening of the year in France, behind Alice in Wonderland's $15.4 million debut last month.
How to Train Your Dragon finished just behind Camping 2, down 38 percent to $10.2 million from 5,824 locations in 53 territories. With a $193.1 million foreign total, Dragons has now surpassed Monsters Vs. Aliens's $183.2 million, and should be able to top its worldwide gross sometime this week.
Kick-Ass added ten territories this weekend for a total of 26, grossing $7.1 million from 2,311 screens. Of note was its third place finish in France, where it opened to $2.1 million. After four weekends in foreign cinemas, Kick-Ass has earned $29.6 million.
In its third weekend, Date Night was down just six percent to $7.5 million in 41 markets for a total of $28.3 million. Also of note is Avatar's continued slow fade; the worldwide record-holder was down 27 percent to $876,000 from 350 screens in 11 markets for an international total of $1.97 billion.
