Universal Adjusts 2010, 2011 Calendar
Universal Pictures unleashed a wave of release schedule changes this morning, making notable adjustments to their 2010 and 2011 slates.
In the most immediately relevant of the moves, The Adjustment Bureau has been pushed back from July 30 to Sept. 17. Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt and based off a short story by Phillip K. Dick, The Adjustment Bureau was one of the more mysterious projects of the summer, and now audiences will have to wait a little bit longer to check it out. The Adjustment Bureau will now face romantic comedy Easy A and Ben Affleck-directed The Town (which just moved to the date from Sept. 10).
Taking The Adjustment Bureau's July 30th date is drama Charlie St. Cloud, starring Zac Efron as a young man who takes a job at a cemetery and proceeds to supernaturally communicate with his deceased brother. Universal has been test screening Charlie St. Cloud with Efron's core fanbase of younger females, and must have determined that it would play better in late summer than on its original Oct. 15 date. Charlie St. Cloud is now scheduled against Beastly (starring Efron's High School Musical co-star Vanessa Hudgens) and Cats & Dogs: Revenge of Kitty Galore.
Originally scheduled for Oct. 1, medieval comedy Your Highness will now go in to battle on Apr. 8, 2011, representing a six month delay. Directed by David Gordon Green and starring James Franco, Danny McBride, Natalie Portman and Zooey Deschanel, Your Highness faces animated Fox movie Rio on its new date.
Besides shuffling existing releases, Universal announced dates for a handful of previously unscheduled movies. Sanctum, a 3-D movie produced by James Cameron, is now scheduled for Mar. 4. Based on real events, the underwater thriller represents the first movie Cameron has produced but not directed since 2002's Solaris. Sanctum currently shares the Mar. 4 date with Sony Pictures' Priest, but, considering they are both in 3D, Priest may find a new date once again.
Universal has also scheduled an {lnk46702}Untitled Ron Howard/Vince Vaughn/Kevin James Comedy{/lnk} for Jan. 14, 2011 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Weekend). It seems like an odd move to place a movie featuring such high-profile talent in January, but this is the same weekend that James's Paul Blart: Mall Cop opened in 2009. Paul Blart went on to become a surprise hit, grossing $146.3 million. The Untitled Comedy opens opposite The Green Hornet, The Cabin in the Woods, and Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf.
Horror movie The Night Chronicles: Devil, which is written and produced but not directed by M. Night Shyamalan, opens Feb. 11, 2011. Also opening that date are Drive Angry, Gnomeo and Juliet and Just Go With It. Sundance documentary Catfish, distributed through Universal's Rogue Pictures, debuts in limited release on Sept. 17. Finally, Universal announced that a movie titled Ballers, for which there is no information available at this moment, is now scheduled for Nov. 4, 2011.
