'Black Hawk Down' Soars on Home Video as 'Harry Potter' Falls
Black Hawk Down landed atop the VHS and DVD rentals chart for the week ending June 16, according to the Video Software Dealers Association.
Ridley Scott's docudrama about the 1993 battle of Mogadishu lifted off with $13.98 million in combined VHS and DVD rental revenue. In its first week of wide release in theaters, it pulled in $40,037,378 en route to $108,638,745.
In the race for second place, Monster's Ball waltzed past Kate & Leopold, despite making less money at the box office. The hardcore drama starring Billy Bob Thornton and Oscar-winner Halle Berry pulled in $8.82 million, or about 28% of the $31,273,922 it earned from its modest theatrical release.
The Meg Ryan-Hugh Jackman romantic comedy wooed a solid $8.20 million, debuting in third place. Released on Christmas day last year, it unwrapped $47,121,859 in theaters.
The Tom Cruise mind trip Vanilla Sky dipped to fourth place with $5.31 million for $33.63 million after four weeks, about a third of the $100,618,344 it collected at the box office.
Rounding out the top five was The Mothman Prophecies, nabbing $5.24 million for a two-week total of $12.02 million, also about of third of its $35,228,696 box office haul from earlier this year.Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone tumbled from first place last week to No. 6 on rentals of $4.85 million, down 37.5%. In three weeks, the boy wizard has conjured $26.01 million, or 8.2% of his $317,575,550 theatrical run.
Overall, DVD rentals totaled $55.4 million, up 14.5 percent from last week, and VHS rentals amassed $111.5 million, up 9.7 percent. Compared to the same frame last year, DVD was up 101.6 percent, while VHS was down 19.6 percent.
