Around-the-World Roundup: 'Dark Knight' Leads, 'Ted' Impresses in New Markets
The Dark Knight Rises held on to first place at the overseas box office for the third weekend in a row with an estimated $67 million from 58 markets. Its top territory was the U.K. with $6.75 million, and the U.K. is also the movie's top market overall at $63.9 million. Overall, the third installment in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy has earned $378.4 million overseas for a worldwide total of $733 million (second on the year behind The Avengers).
Warner Bros. included some interesting comparison statistics in this weekend's report. The Dark Knight Rises is currently tracking 31 percent ahead of The Dark Knight across the same markets at this time when using the exchange rates that existed during The Dark Knight's run. Using today's more favorable rates, however, The Dark Knight Rises is currently running 49 percent ahead of its predecessor.
With openings in China and Italy to look forward to, it now looks like a foregone conclusion that The Dark Knight Rises will wind up with over $1 billion worldwide.
International sensation Ice Age: Continental Drift held on to second place once again with $32.8 million. The movie was off just 11 percent in China ($11.1 million) and 6 percent in South Korea ($2.5 million). It now ranks 20th on the all-time overseas chart with $584 million, and its worldwide total is at $715.9 million.
If there were any questions remaining about Ted's overseas prospects, they were pretty much answered this weekend. The movie earned an estimated $32 million from 20 markets, which brings its early total to $77.3 million. It scored a huge $14.3 million in the U.K., which is the third-best debut ever for a Universal movie behind Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and King Kong. It also impressed with a $7.4 million launch in Germany, and had the best Hollywood comedy debut ever in Russia ($5.5 million). The movie expands in to a handful of territories next weekend, including Spain, and it's completely reasonable to expect it to ultimately earn north of $200 million from foreign markets.
Brave continued its gradual foreign roll-out this weekend by expanding to a total of 31 markets and adding $16.5 million. It's now earned $118 million, and it has only played in 56 percent of the international market so far.
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted grossed $15.8 million in 44 territories this weekend for an overseas total of $312 million. It had a nice $4.5 million debut in Japan, and also opened strong in Poland ($2 million), Norway ($1.6 million), Sweden ($1.3 million) and Hong Kong ($1.2 million).
Coinciding with its domestic debut, the Total Recall remake launched in 12 international markets this weekend. The movie's top territories were Taiwan ($1.25 million) and Malaysia ($1.02 million), both of which were first place debuts. The weekend's other domestic opener, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, also opened in some overseas territories, though the vast majority of its earnings came from the U.K. ($2.66 million).
Two weeks ahead of its U.S. release, ParaNorman opened in second place in Mexico with $2.3 million. The stop-motion animated movie is set to open domestically on August 17.
