Around-the-World Roundup: 'Unstoppable' Bursts Into First
Unstoppable cruised in to first place at the international box office over the weekend, though that was due more to its wide launch than any particular strength. Due Date dipped to second on decent holds, while Skyline opened well in a few territories. Though it was a somewhat quiet foreign session, the global opening of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will undoubtedly provide quite the jolt this coming weekend.
Unstoppable debuted to $19.3 million from 4,137 screens in 39 markets. While it was far from spectacular, it did eclipse last year's Denzel Washington-Tony Scott train movie The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 in a majority of territories. Unstoppable's biggest opening came in China, where it debuted in first place to $5.6 million. It also opened first in Spain ($1.6 million) and Taiwan ($1 million), and had decent starts in France ($2.9 million), South Korea ($1.35 million) and Germany ($1.2 million). The movie is set to open in Russia and the United Kingdom on Nov. 25 and 26, respectively.
Due Date dipped 23 percent to $17.7 million from 4,325 screens. Its top territory for the weekend was France, where it opened in third place to $3.2 million. Among holdover markets, Due Date was down a decent 35 percent: it held first in both the United Kingdom and Germany, respectively earning $3.1 million (off 19 percent) and $2.7 million (down 28 percent). The Robert Downey Jr.-Zach Galifianakis comedy's total rose to $47.1 million overseas for a worldwide (domestic plus foreign) tally in excess of $107 million.
While it was a bit of a disappointment domestically, Skyline soared to around $10.5 million overseas from a relatively small number of openings. Over half of its gross came from a nice $5.3 million first place finish in Russia. It also made $1.9 million in the U.K. and $1.2 million in Australia.
Despicable Me added $9.9 million over the weekend to bring its overseas total to an impressive $271 million. Once again its best territory was Japan, where it eased just 17 percent to $1.5 million. Worldwide, the animated comedy has earned just under $520 million.
Jackass 3-D fell 33 percent to $8.5 million for a total of $31.8 million. That's more foreign coin than the first two Jackass movies combined.
Saw 3D declined a light 18 percent to $8.4 million, bolstered by a solid $3.2 million fourth place start in France. This brought the seventh Saw movie's overseas total to $46.2 million and its worldwide figure to just north of $90 million. It's positioned to become the sixth Saw movie to pass $100 million worldwide by the end of the month.
Potiche had a strong $6.8 million first place opening in its native France, which pushed its weekend tally to $7.5 million. Since debuting last weekend, the comedy has earned just over $8 million worldwide.
The Social Network dipped 20 percent to $7.4 million from 2,875 screens in 61 territories. It had decent openings in Italy ($1.1 million) and India ($537,529) along with a strong $261,857 number one start in New Zealand. Overall, The Social Network has earned $76.7 million overseas for a worldwide total in excess of $164 million.
