Around-the-World Roundup: 'Paranormal Activity 3' Haunts Foreign Charts
Aside from its strong domestic debut, Paranormal Activity 3 also topped Real Steel to rule the foreign box office this weekend. Johnny English Reborn and The Three Musketeers continued strong overseas runs, which helps to offset their disappointing domestic debuts, while Contagion had its first major rollout.

Paranormal Activity 3 debuted to $26.1 million in 42 markets. The horror three-quel opened in first place in the United Kingdom ($5.4 million), Russia ($3.1 million), Australia ($3 million), Mexico ($2 million) and Spain ($1 million), and it also had decent debuts in France ($2.7 million) and Brazil ($1.2 million). Across all its territories it appears to have opened slightly ahead of predecessor Paranormal Activity 2, which ultimately earned over $92 million overseas last year.

After holding the title for two weeks in a row, Real Steel dipped to second place with an estimated $18.5 million from 32 territories. It claimed the top spot in Brazil with $1.2 million and also had a solid second place start in France with $2.7 million. Through three weekends in foreign theaters, the Hugh Jackman robot boxing movie has grossed over $86 million.

Johnny English Reborn may have only opened to $3.8 million in the U.S. this weekend, but that obviously didn't stop the bumbling spy from continuing to rake in the cash overseas. The movie added $14.3 million from 44 markets for a strong total of $105.4 million. Neither of its major openings were particularly explosive, though—it took third in Mexico with $949,000 and eighth place in France with $1.1 million.

The Three Musketeers dipped around 43 percent from holdover territories to add an estimated $13 million this weekend. Its biggest debut came from Australia, where it scored $909,000. The Paul W.S. Anderson swashbuckler is currently playing in 56 markets, and has so far amassed a solid $64.4 million.

Contagion expanded in to a few key markets and had its best weekend yet with $9.8 million. It tallied a solid second place start in Australia ($1.6 million), and took third in the U.K. and Germany with $2.3 million and $1.3 million, respectively. The epidemic thriller has now made nearly $23 million overseas.

After a few quiet weekends at the foreign box office, things should get much livelier when The Adventures of Tintin opens this weekend in at least 19 territories. That includes major European markets like France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, the U.K. and, of course, author Herge's native country Belgium.
