MPAA Ratings: 'Just Go With It,' 'The Rite' & More
The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration released their weekly bulletin this afternoon, which included new ratings for Just Go With It and The Rite.
Just Go With It was rated PG-13 for "frequent crude and sexual content, partial nudity, brief drug references and language." This is star Adam Sandler and director Dennis Dugan's sixth collaboration, and their five previous movies were also rated PG-13. It seems to be a pretty successful formula: Big Daddy, I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry, You Don't Mess with the Zohan and Grown Ups each made over $100 million, and Happy Gilmore became a cult classic of sorts after its theatrical run. Just Go With It is set to open on Valentine's Day weekend (Feb. 11) against Justin Bieber: Never Say Never, The Eagle and Gnomeo and Juliet.
The Rite received a PG-13 rating for "disturbing thematic material, violence, frightening images and language including sexual references." While this was softer than the R rating awarded to all of The Exorcist movies, it's similar to other recent supernatural horror movies like The Uninvited, The Unborn, and The Exorcism of Emily Rose. The Rite opens Jan. 28 opposite The Mechanic.
The Heart Specialist was tagged with an R rating for "some sexual content and language." After nearly four years on the shelves, the Zoe Saldana-Wood Harris romantic comedy finally hits around 500 theaters this Friday against The Green Hornet and The Dilemma.
In an interesting development, France's Best Foreign Language Film entry Of Gods and Men received a rating change despite no clear indication of an appeal. The movie was previously rated R for "a scene of graphic violence" but is now rated PG-13 for "a momentary scene of startling wartime violence, some disturbing images and brief language." Of Gods and Men has already grossed over $30 million overseas (including a $27 million haul in France) and is set for a limited domestic release on Feb. 25.
Finally, The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman earned a PG-13 rating for "sequences of stylized violence including some bloody images, brief crude humor and partial nudity." The foreign action comedy opens in limited release on March 18.
