MPAA Ratings: 'The Fighter,' 'Paul' and More
The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration released their weekly bulletin this afternoon, which included designations for The Fighter, Paul, What's Your Number? and more.
The Fighter was rated R for "language throughout, drug content, some violence and sexuality." Directed by David O. Russell and based on a true story, the drama features Mark Wahlberg as boxer 'Irish' Mickey Ward and Christian Bale as his troubled brother Dickie. It's being touted as an Oscar contender, though a surprise screening at the AFI Fest in Los Angeles tonight will mark the first time anyone in the public has actually seen the movie. The Fighter is currently set for a limited debut on Dec. 10, before expanding nationwide on Dec. 17 opposite Tron Legacy, How Do You Know and Yogi Bear.
Sci-fi comedy Paul earned an R rating for "language including sexual references, and some drug use." The movie finds Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz co-stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost meeting an alien named Paul (voiced by Seth Rogen) while on a cross-country road trip. Directed by Greg Mottola (Superbad, Adventureland), Paul opens Mar. 18 against The Dark Fields, Beastly and The Lincoln Lawyer.
What's Your Number? has been rated R for "sexual content and language." The comedy stars Anna Faris, Chris Evans and Zachary Quinto and opens on April 29 along with the remake of The Thing and Disney comedy Prom.
The Mechanic was slapped with an R rating for "strong brutal violence throughout, language, some sexual content and nudity." A remake of the 1972 Charles Bronson movie of the same name, The Mechanic was independently produced then recently picked up by CBS Films for distribution. Starring Jason Statham, Ben Foster and Donald Sutherland, the action movie opens Jan. 28 opposite The Rite and Restless.
In a report filled with R ratings, Rabbit Hole stood out as the lone PG-13 movie. The Lionsgate drama earned this rating due to "mature thematic elements, some drug use and language." Rabbit Hole has received a bit of awards buzz for leads Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart, and will debut in limited release on Dec. 17 before expanding in subsequent weeks.
Hemingway's Garden of Eden, which Roadside Attractions recently scheduled for limited release on Dec. 10, received an R rating for "strong sexual content, nudity and some language." Hesher, starring Inception's Joseph Gordon-Levitt in a decidedly darker role, was rated R for "disturbing violent behavior, sexual content including graphic dialogue, pervasive language, and drug content—some in the presence of a child." Featuring Colin Farrell, Keira Knightley and a host of other prominent actors, British crime drama London Boulevard was tagged with an R rating for "strong violence, pervasive language, some nudity and drug use." Hesher and London Boulevard are both currently undated.
