Seven-Day Summary: 'Megamind' Solid But Not 'Incredible' in First Week
Megamind blasted off in first place for the week, Due Date got off to a robust start and For Colored Girls was solid in its debut. Overall, weekly business was up 23 percent from the same timeframe last year, and it ranked as the second highest-grossing holiday opening week ever, behind 2003.
Drawing $59.7 million in its seven-day opening, Megamind came in a tad below How to Train Your Dragon's $63.1 million launch earlier this year, and the disparity between it and the comparable Despicable Me only grew. With weekdays bolstered by its July release, Despicable Me had an $85.6 million opening week. Megamind, though, received a bump from Veteran's Day, which landed on Thursday (posting a nearly-Despicable $7.6 million on that day). Megamind's release lined up day and date with the similarly-themed The Incredibles from 2004, but Megamind paled in comparison to Incredibles' $93 million first week (or the equivalent of nearly $120 million adjusted for ticket price inflation and without a boost from 3D prices).
Due Date was strong out of the gate for an R-rated comedy, boasting a $43.5 million seven-day start. While far behind The Hangover's $72 million, it was much bigger than Role Models's $26.4 million launch on the same week in 2008.
For Colored Girls rang in with $24.2 million in seven days. While that was the third lowest-grossing opening week yet for a Tyler Perry movie, it wasn't branded like a typical Perry movie, and it was on the high end for an ensemble drama.
Red saw its smallest decline yet, easing 22 percent to $11.7 million, and it also had the slimmest percentage dip among all nationwide releases for the week. In 21 days, the action comedy has amassed $74.7 million and is on the verge of surpassing The A-Team. Secretariat also stood its ground, down 23 percent to $5.6 million for a $52.5 million tally in 35 days.
Saw 3D and Paranormal Activity 2 lost their shock value following Halloween. Saw 3D slipped 65 percent to $10.1 million, matching the second-week percentage fall of Saw V. Its $40.7 million 14-day haul was still anemic for the series. Paranormal Activity 2 tumbled 56 percent to $9.1 million, dropping harder and grossing less than its predecessor after Halloween. Its $79 million tally in 21 days, though, was nonetheless strong for its genre.
