Limited Report: 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo,' 'Joneses,' 'Perfect Game'
For the second weekend in a row, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo led the way among limited releases. Meanwhile, new movies The Joneses and The Perfect Game failed to gain much traction, while high-profile releases Greenberg and The Runaways continued their retreat.
Based on the best-selling Swedish novel of the same name, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo continued its respectable limited run, posting its best weekend tally yet with $631,021 at 152 locations (up 26 from last week). After five weekends, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has grossed just over $3 million, not bad for a Swedish-language thriller but also unremarkable considering the massive popularity of the book. Worldwide, the movie has tallied over $90 million since its release last year.
Opening at 193 theaters, The Joneses settled for $509,689. Starring David Duchovny and Demi Moore, the movie put up a weak $2,641 per screen average, hindering chances of a future expansion.
The Perfect Game, a baseball drama picked up for distribution by IndustryWorks after Lionsgate dropped it last year, scrapped together an estimated $494,000 at 417 theaters for a meager $1,185 per site average. That translates to less than 65,000 tickets sold, or about half the number of tickets the Los Angeles Dodgers sold during their home stand this weekend.
High-profile limited releases Greenberg and The Runaways continued to struggle, grossing $320,111 and $303,668, respectively. After five weekends, both movies have made right around $3 million, major disappointments considering the involvement of the likes of Ben Stiller and Kristen Stewart.
A handful of movies performed fairly well in their extremely limited debuts, beginning with documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop, which grossed $170,756 at eight locations, averaging $21,345 per site. Best Foreign Language Oscar winner The Secret in Their Eyes opened in ten theaters, banking $167,866 for $16,787 per site average. Anthony Hopkins drama The City of Your Final Destination tallied $24,401 at one location, and distributor Screen Media plans to expand it in to a few more cities next weekend.
