MPAA Ratings: 'Nightmare on Elm Street,' 'Sex and the City 2' and More
The Motion Picture Association of America's Classification and Ratings Administration was busy this week, issuing ratings for five upcoming nationwide releases in their Wednesday morning bulletin.
A Nightmare on Elm Street, opening next Friday, received an R rating for "strong bloody horror violence, disturbing images, terror and language." Despite the trend towards PG-13 horror movies, horror remakes like Friday the 13th, Halloween and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre have all kept their originals' gruesome natures intact, and it appears the Nightmare on Elm Street remake will do the same. The movie features Jackie Earle Haley as the famous Freddie Krueger, while Kyle Gallner, Rooney Mara, Katie Cassidy, Thomas Dekker and Kellan Lutz play his potential victims.
Predictably, Sex and the City 2 is rated R for "some strong sexual content and language," though it's missing the "graphic nudity" found in the first Sex and the City's rating. Sex and the City banked $152.7 million in 2008, and the sequel, which finds the ladies on an Abu Dhabi adventure, hopes to score another success with its similar late May release. It squares off with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time on Memorial Day weekend.
Animated movie Despicable Me, featuring the vocal talents of Steve Carell and Jason Segel, among others, garnered a PG rating for "rude humor and mild action." It used to be the case where a PG rating was an anomaly for an animated movie; last year, however, The Princess and the Frog and Ponyo were the only new releases to earn a G rating, and no 2010 animated releases are currently rated G. Despicable Me opens July 9 opposite the Predators reboot.
Comic book adaptation Scott Pilgrim vs. the World received a PG-13 for "stylized violence, sexual content, language and drug references." Featuring Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman and Anna Kendrick, Scott Pilgrim finds the titular character battling his new girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends in various video game-inspired conflicts. This is writer-director Edgar Wright's third feature after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and his first to avoid an R rating. Scott Pilgrim is currently scheduled to open Aug. 13, where it will face off with Julia Roberts in Eat Pray Love and a wealth of 1980s action stars in The Expendables.
Lottery Ticket, featuring Bow Wow and Ice Cube, is rated PG-13 for "sexual content, language including a drug reference, some violence and brief underage drinking." The comedy follows a young man (Bow Wow) who wins big in the lottery and needs to avoid his greedy neighbors for a weekend before he can cash in his winning ticket. Lottery Ticket will open Aug. 20, the same weekend as Nanny McPhee Returns and Takers.
