Seven-Day Summary: 'Fockers' Barely Beats 'Grit'
Despite leading the box office for five of the seven days this week, True Grit came up just short of topping Little Fockers. This near-miss combined with the lack of new releases resulted in the top four spots remaining unchanged this week. Overall box office was down a whopping 25 percent from last year, when Avatar dominated with $96.9 million.
Little Fockers added $33.4 million to bring its 16-day total to $110.2 million. Its 47 percent decline was the steepest for any movie in nationwide release and was notably worse than Meet the Fockers's drop at the same point. Its total also lagged way behind Meet the Fockers's $175.8 million, and it's trailing Meet the Parents in estimated attendance.
True Grit dropped 35 percent to $33.2 million for a total of $95.4 million. That makes it the fifth-highest grossing Western-themed movie on record, not accounting for ticket price inflation, and it's poised to become the first traditional Western to pass the $100 million mark since Unforgiven in 1992.
In its third week, Tron Legacy was off 42 percent to $25.6 million. With its $138.1 million total, it will top the final tally of The Matrix Revolutions by the end of the day. Finishing in fourth place, Yogi Bear eased 39 percent to $15.4 million for a total of $68.8 million.
The Fighter and Black Swan held well and managed to move up three spots from last week. The Fighter dipped 16 percent to $14.6 million, while Black Swan was off a light 14 percent to $14.2 million. To this point, the Oscar hopefuls have racked up $50.8 million and $53.1 million, respectively.
The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader grossed $13.3 million in its fourth week for a total of $89.9 million. While it has fallen short of its predecessors, it's a lock to become distributor 20th Century Fox's first $100 million movie since Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel passed that mark in December 2009.
Tangled continued to solidify itself as one of 2010's most-impressive box office performers, dipping 39 percent to $12.6 million for a total of $170.7 million. It will soon pass The Karate Kid to become the tenth highest-grossing movie from 2010, which would remarkably make it the fifth animated movie in that club. Tangled also topped Gulliver's Travels again; the Jack Black comedy added $11.7 million for a paltry $29.9 million total.
The King's Speech rounded out the Top Ten this week, earning $11.3 million at 700 locations. Since opening in limited release at the end of November, the Colin Firth-Geoffrey Rush historical drama has earned $26.5 million.
